The actual broken porcelain corpus of Jesus tied with twine to the pine-stick cross Nicholas made

01 / THE STORY

Found in the dirt.
Held with love.

In his book, Richard Yancheski recalls metal detecting with his grandson Nicholas near Hanover, Pennsylvania. What they uncovered was a broken porcelain body of Jesus: missing pieces, without a cross, and easily overlooked.

Nicholas saw something worth keeping. With pine sticks and twine, he made a cross and carefully attached the broken figure. To him, it was beautiful.

The cross later passed from person to person. Richard describes the prayers, experiences, and stories people brought back—and his desire to preserve their written testimonies.

02 / THE MEANING

Bring every broken piece
to the Cross.

01

You are not discarded.

Loss, illness, doubt, and regret can leave us feeling incomplete. This broken cross invites us to remember that our wounds do not place us beyond Christ’s love.

02

Let prayer be a beginning.

Turn toward Jesus in prayer, at Mass, and in Eucharistic adoration. Bring what you carry to Him, even when you do not yet have the words.

03

Your story can offer hope.

A simple, honest account of your experience may encourage someone walking through their own difficult season. You do not need to be a writer to bear witness.

“Do not hide your brokenness from Jesus. Bring it to the cross. He knows what to do with it.”“Stand for the Cross,” p. 8
